After the two defeats recorded last year, in the Europeans and in the presidential election, the Romanian Social Democrats (PSD) suffered a historic rout in the municipal elections on Sunday, organized in a single ballot, under drastic health security conditions.
With an abstention rate of 54%, the status quo could have prevailed.
But that was without counting on the young generation, the 18-34 year olds.
1.8 million of them (38.6%) went to the polls, especially in large cities, causing some major surprises.
Thus, after twenty years of reign, the PSD lost the municipality of Vrancea, passed to the liberals, but also the capital Bucharest, after more than ten years of chaotic administration, which fell to an independent candidate
.
In total, out of the ten largest cities in Romania, only two were won by the Social Democrats.
