German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited Russia's opposition leader Alexei Navalny last week, during his stay in Berlin - this is what Navalny and the German government confirmed today (Monday).

Deputy Chancellor Olaf Schultz called the poisoning a "murderous attack," which, along with news of Merkel's visit, could upset Moscow, which rejects the findings of German, French and Swedish experts that Nabalin was poisoned with nerve gas in Russia last month.

"It was a personal visit to the hospital," Merkel spokesman Stephen Zeibert said at a news conference, refusing to reveal details about what was said at the meeting or how long it lasted.

Navalny wrote on Twitter that it was a "private meeting and conversation with the family," adding that "I am very grateful to Chancellor Merkel for visiting me at the hospital."

Navalny was flown from Russia to Berlin last month after falling ill during a domestic flight.

He was treated at Charita Hospital in the city for 32 days, before being released last week.

Deputy Chancellor Schultz said international organizations had independently confirmed that Navalny had been poisoned with Russian nerve gas Novichuk, and he had urged Moscow to cooperate with the poisoning investigation.

"It was a cruel and murderous assault," Schultz said.

"We call on Russia to cooperate in the investigation. And of course, Europe will have to decide together on an appropriate response."

French President Emmanuel Macron will also address the issue, saying today that Russia should provide explanations for the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, or "deal with the international consequences."

He added that "it is clear that this is an attempted assassination of a Russian opposition leader on Russian soil, by an agent with a chemical activated in Russia."

A Nablani case further aggravated relations between Moscow and several Western countries.

Merkel was facing calls to stop the nearly completed gas pipeline, which was designed to bring more Russian gas to Germany.

Asked whether European sanctions against Russia should include the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Schultz said it was a privately owned project of nearly 100 companies, adding that its completion would reduce Germany's dependence on energy.
