Several hundred feminist activists demonstrated in the streets of Mexico City on Monday to demand the legalization of abortion throughout Mexico, on the eve of the global day of action for access to safe and legal abortion.

Mostly dressed in black and with their faces hidden, the demonstrators gathered in the historic center of Mexico City where some clashes erupted in front of an impressive police device which then framed their course in the streets of the city.

"We want abortion, legal, safe and free for all women,"

shouted the protesters.

They demand that abortion be decriminalized throughout the country, because it has only been legal in Mexico City, since 2007, and in the state of Oaxaca (south), since 2019, until the twelfth week of pregnancy. .

Except in Cuba and Uruguay where it is authorized, abortion is considered a crime in Latin America.

In a context of increased violence against women in Mexico (more than a thousand feminicides recorded in 2019), most of whom went unpunished, feminist groups have stepped up their protest actions to defend the cause of women.
