Will the traffic jams on the Middle Ring soon be a thing of the past?
If a Munich company has its way, commuters should soon be taking gondolas to work.
A Munich company wants to revolutionize traffic in the big city.
In the future, commuters will roar through Munich * in gondolas.
Cities around the world have already expressed an interest.
Munich
- Monday morning, once again nothing goes on the
Munich ring and
access
roads
.
And now imagine how you
float
relaxed in a small
gondola
several meters above the
traffic jam
, reading and arriving on time for your appointment.
This is not a utopia, but could be a reality in the foreseeable future - if the Munich start-up
Ottobahn has its
way.
Outside of Munich, gondolas could even travel at 250 km / h
“We are, so to speak, on the third level,” explains managing director
Marc Schindler
(40) of
tz
.
The principle: The
cabins
are available as one, four-seater or cargo capsules.
Each
cabin
has its own electric drive that
moves
it on the three meter wide
rail system
.
Two e-bike batteries are sufficient for the
cab
to accelerate up to 60 km / h in urban areas, and even up to 250 km / h in combination with several capsules outside of town.
"We can lower the
cabins
at any point
from a height of five to ten meters
- right in front of your front door, so to speak," explains Schindler.
Because the customer can order a door-to-door connection via the app.
The transport system does not need a parking space for the cabins.
“They circulate in the
rail network
- ideally several thousand pieces in a big city.” At night, the
gondolas could
then linger on a parking space on the outskirts.
Two years ago there was already the idea of a cable car in Munich (video)
The morning coffee could already be ready in the gondola
There
could be an extra service
in the
gondolas
: "Anything is conceivable," says
Schindler
.
"When the passenger gets on in the morning, his cappuccino is already there, and supermarket purchases are waiting for him on the way home in the evening."
The twelve software developers and mechanical engineers at
Ottobahn
,
which was founded in 2019,
are already well advanced with their plans.
In her office in Obersendling, the
transport system of
the future is already
driving
a 36-meter route over the desks.
“When I'm at the coffee machine and want to go to the workshop quickly, I order a booth,” says
Schindler
.
Only the draining does not work in the four meter high rooms.
"This construction, we have been developing with the
Fraunhofer Institute IML in Dortmund
, it should be completed by the end of the year." The groundbreaking ceremony for a proper test track on a kilometer in length should already done the year - "hopefully in
the south of Munich
private, probably on a Terrain".

Not only Munich is interested in taking over the transport system
All that is needed is courageous politicians who
want to build
the
transport
system.
Apparently there are.
“Our goal is to start commercial operations in 2023.
Three German municipalities have already inquired.
We also have negotiations with countries like
India
or
Shanghai
. ”The Munich-based company develops the concept to a certain degree.
"We deliver the software, the concept, the structure of the infrastructure is taken over by partners in a license model."
The
Ottobahn
, whose name is inspired by
King Otto
(Bavarian roots) and the internationally positive term “Autobahn”, has a global market.
Nevertheless,
Schindler
would be
happy if the
gondolas were
first used in
Munich
.
“Personally, I get
stuck
in
traffic
too often
.
I would also like to spare my son that. "

Another company is planning to drive people from Munich in cable cars through the city in the future.
Such alternative modes of transport have also been an issue in the Munich city council.
