An AfD politician becomes city council chairman of Gera - but that was only possible with votes from other parties. SPD chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz recalls the Kemmerich case.

AfD politician Reinhard Etzrodt was elected chairman of the city council in Gera - apparently with two votes from the CDU, SPD, Left, Greens or FDP.

Although the parliamentary groups reject the guilt, the case causes a stir.

Now SPD Chancellor candidate and Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz has also spoken out and criticized the election.

"Since the events in Thuringia in February there has been a broad consensus among the democratic parties that no prime minister may be lifted into office with the votes of the AfD," said Scholz of the "Thüringer Allgemeine".

He alluded to the scandal surrounding the election of FDP member of the state parliament Thomas Kemmerich with votes from the AfD and CDU as Thuringian Prime Minister.

According to the newspaper, Scholz said this must "of course also apply to other levels and the offices there," with a view to the election of Etzrodt.

"There should be no cooperation with right-wing extremists in cities and towns either."

Etzrodt received 23 of 40 votes in the secret election on Thursday evening and thus significantly more than the twelve votes of the AfD.

So he must also have been elected by members of other parties.

Even if all representatives of the smaller, local groups voted for Etzrodt, that would mean: at least two representatives of the parties represented in the Bundestag - i.e. from the CDU, SPD, Left, Greens or FDP - must have voted for the AfD.
