The bride of the Nobel Prize for Literature, Svetlana Alekseevich, one of the most prominent figures in the Belarusian opposition, has left the country for Germany.

However, according to one of her associates, she plans to return to the country after the treatments she is instructed to undergo, "if the authorities allow it."



Alekseevich, 72, who won the Nobel Prize in 2015, was one of the last two senior members of the opposition coordination council left in the country after last month's election.

Since dictator Alexander Lukashenko declared a landslide victory in the election, hundreds of thousands have taken to the streets to demonstrate against his reign, which has continued since 1994.



More than 13,000 people have been arrested since early August, including some opposition leaders.

Others have fled to other European countries, including Lukashenko's main candidate in the election, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya.

The Diaspora in Lithuania, met today with French President Emanuel Macron, the most senior Western leader with whom it is meant to date.

He promised to support the citizens of Belarus.

Western diplomats with Svetlana Alekseevich, this month

Alekseevich has been one of the most prominent voices against the authorities since the election, and she will be questioned following her membership in the Coordinating Council who is accused of trying to seize power illegally.

"She will be back," her acquaintance Tatiana Tiorina said yesterday in a phone call with Reuters.

She said the prominent writer has business meetings and she plans to attend a book fair in Sweden and an awards ceremony in Sicily.



"Obviously, her return depends on the authorities to allow her to do so," she added.

This month, the return of the Archbishop of Minsk to Poland was prevented from returning to Poland, after he expressed support for the protesters and angered Lukashenko.

A senior official at the Lithuanian embassy in Belarus said Western diplomats in Minsk remained on duty at Alekseevich's home or were on standby in case the authorities tried to arrest her.
