The Hong Kong Institute of Public Opinion announced the results of a poll on Tuesday (29th). Among the more than 700 respondents who claimed to be democrats, 47.1% supported the retention of democrats and 45.8% advocated leaving.

The results of the polls proved that the interviewees did not reach a consensus on whether to stay or leave. Members of the Council will inevitably offend the other half whether they stay or leave.

Under this circumstance, the Democratic Party, the Civic Party, Zhang Chaoxiong, Mao Mengjing, and Shao Jiazhen made the political judgment of staying in office and parted ways with Zhu Kaidi and Chen Zhiquan, which deserved support.

However, if staying in office only inherited the logic of the "protestant faction" in another way, it is undoubtedly embarrassing.

After the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress made a decision in mid-August to allow incumbent members of the Legislative Council to remain in office for no less than one year, the democratic party’s operation on the issue of leaving and leaving was a trifling matter.

The Democratic Party and the Civic Party advocate retention, but under the pressure of the "protestants," they dare not simply announce their retention. Instead, they leave the decision to public opinion.

When the Hong Kong Democracy Research Institute proposed to use two-thirds of the democratic supporters as the retention threshold, the Democratic Party advocated lowering the threshold to more than half.

A discerning person will inevitably feel that these politicians are doing everything they can to tailor themselves to "create" poll results that are beneficial to them.

Citizens did not take a clear view

Now that the polls are released, the democrats staying behind in the parliament can be said to have got their wish.

After tossing for a long time, is everything back on track?

It seems not that simple.

Hu Zhiwei, the convener of the pro-democracy faction and the chairman of the Democratic Party, stated that there are three considerations for staying behind: one is to try to delay the government's "draconian laws"; the other is to stick to the parliamentary front and let the three major fronts (civilian, parliamentary, and international) complement each other; The platform allows the public and the international community to focus on discussions.

These remarks show that the undercurrent of populism is still there. Although the democratic congressmen have not followed the call of the "protestants" to boycott the parliament, they still have not shaken off the "parliamentary speculation" in their thinking.

Democrats should question or even express opposition to some poorly thought-out government bills. This is necessary for rational political discussion.

But if staying behind is to cooperate with the civil and international fronts, it would be whimsical. The momentum of the civil fronts was quickly reversed by the "Hong Kong National Security Law", and the international fronts put Hong Kong in the game of great powers. Hong Kong will be in the process. The loss of subjectivity in the end hurt 7.4 million people, but it could not shake the mainland.

Parliamentarians should promote social welfare

Of course there will be resistance in the parliament, but the purpose of the resistance should be to promote social well-being, not the ideological-led "resistance" understood by the democrats.

In an earlier interview, the Labour Party, Zhang Chaoxiong, criticized Hong Kong for lack of humane public services. We might as well imagine that if the left-behind democratic MPs work towards the goal of promoting "humanized public services" in the future, will Hong Kong be better?

It is questionable whether the democrats have the ability to clearly position their work.

Many of them are professionals. They are theoretically rational and willing to compromise. Unfortunately, after the emergence of the "protestant faction", rational compromise was arrogantly denounced as "surrender", as if Hong Kong had no moderate course apart from tit-for-tat confrontation. .

If the democrats continue to be disturbed by irrational thinking, they will find it difficult to concentrate on discussing politics. Once they touch the central red line, they will be dealt with seriously.

After experiencing the anti-amendment campaign and the new crown pneumonia epidemic, Hong Kong has already suffered five tuberculosis and seven injuries.

For the revival of this homeland, the government must be the first responsible person, but the democrats as the main force of the parliament are not without responsibility.

They are willing to take the initiative to participate in Hong Kong's reforms and contribute to Hong Kong's re-start, or they may be stuck in a "struggle" like an illusion, depending on their thoughts.

Can Hong Kong's politicians take politics as a career?
