Several people were killed during a hostage situation that unfolded in Salem, Oregon, on Monday afternoon, authorities said.
Deputies with the Marion County Sheriff's Office responded to a call regarding a possible hostage situation in Juneva Place SE around 12:30 p.m., according to a press release issued by the Sheriff's office.
Salem is about 70 miles southwest of Portland, Oregon.
A trained hostage negotiator was on the scene and attempted to speak to the suspect by phone, but "shots were fired," the statement said.
"There were multiple deaths during this incident, including the suspect," the statement said.
The Sheriff's office did not report how many people died in the incident.
The Oregon State Police is conducting the investigation into the shooting as they would any shooting with an officer involved for the sheriff's office, the statement said.
No officers were injured and the officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave while the investigation is underway, according to the statement.
