Full text of Chen Shuzhuang's statement

This morning, I have written to inform the President of the Legislative Council that for personal reasons, I will complete my four-year term tomorrow (September 30) as scheduled and will not continue to serve as a member of the Legislative Council.

Just turned forty-nine years old, moving towards half a hundred, thinking seriously about where to go in the second half of life.

Last year, the long interrogation of the nine sons of Occupy Central, coupled with the sudden diagnosis of a brain tumor, had a great impact on me and my family.

Fortunately, the operation went smoothly and the recovery was good. Now the situation is stable. After the catastrophe, I deeply realize that my family and health are more important than everything else and must be cherished. Therefore, I have long planned to bid farewell to politics after completing the four-year term of this Legislative Council.

Objectively speaking, the sentence in the Occupy Nine Sons case did not allow me to participate in the general election of the Legislative Council originally scheduled to be held on the 6th of this month.

The SAR government and the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress used the epidemic as an excuse to extend the term of the current Legislative Council for at least one year.

This sudden change has not changed my plan to bid farewell to the Legislative Council as scheduled, but I didn't announce it earlier because I didn't want to affect the "remaining polls."

Based on the results of the above-mentioned polls and the party's stated intention to "stay" in advance, the Civic Party finally decided to extend the party's current legislative council members for another year.

For personal reasons, I failed to comply with the party's decision, and I now announce my withdrawal from the Civic Party.

Being in politics is a coincidence. I joined the Civic Party in 2006 and was elected as a member of the legal profession. I was elected as a district councilor in 2007. I was elected as a member of the Legislative Council twice in 2008 and 2016. It was the longest day in my first half of my life for 14 years without knowing it. Jobs.

Looking back at this period of ups and downs, we share weal and woe with Hong Kong people. I often feel that I can do too little for Hong Kong people in Parliament and civil society, and I feel ashamed of some things that I cannot do well.

There have been more and more distressing things in Hong Kong in recent years, but at the same time, I am deeply moved by the perseverance of Hong Kong people. I am proud of my identity as a Hong Kong person, and I will not forget my original intentions and wait for the dawn.
