After the reduction in the bonus on electric cars announced Monday by the Ministry of the Economy, the increase in the automobile penalty is also on the program for 2021. The budget bill provides for higher ceilings, but also a tightening of the bonus scale / malus, which defines the CO2 emission thresholds from which motorists are taxed.

This device, which aims to dissuade the purchase of excessively polluting vehicles, will reach unprecedented ceilings: the maximum penalty, at 20,000 euros since March 2020, will increase to 40,000 euros from 2021, then to 50,000 euros in 2022. Continuously increasing since 2019, when it was set at 10,500 euros, this tax is part of the ecological transition advocated by the government.

Since March 2020, the maximum penalty of 20,000 euros applies to new vehicles that emit at least 213 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer.

From January 1, 2021, this ceiling, which will therefore increase to 40,000 euros, will apply from an emission of 225 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

A new, more severe scale

Each quantity of CO2 emitted per kilometer is associated with a tax of a specific amount.

These amounts are defined by the malus / bonus scale, the triggering thresholds of which will be further lowered.

Currently, the penalty is triggered at 138 g / km of CO2, and entails a minimum surcharge of 50 euros.

From January 1, 2021, it will apply from 131 g / km, and at 123 g / km on January 1, 2022.

Some very popular cars will not be affected by the new schedule.

The Renault Clio V 1.0 TCe 100 and the Citroën C4 III 1.5 Blue HDI 110, for example, will not be subject to any penalty.

Conversely, sports cars will be the biggest losers from the penalty, as an article from Motor1 shows.

The Audi RS Q3 for example, which emits 222 g / km of CO2, will be taxed at 35,324 euros, while the Nissan GT-R will receive a maximum penalty of 40,000 euros, due to its emissions of 275 g / km.

With these new measures, the government is fulfilling one of the demands of the Citizen's Climate Convention: to strengthen the bonus-malus on vehicles.

It also anticipates the objectives set by the European Parliament on the reduction of CO2 emissions between 2021 and 2030: the average rate targeted for next year is expected at 95g / km, and should reach 59 g / km in 2030. What is this? encourage motorists to go green.
