The issue of senior appointments has been at the heart of a dispute between the Likud and Blue and White for some time.
The two sides were supposed to formulate an agreed-upon mechanism for appointments such as the police commissioner, the state attorney general and the attorney general. The Likud demanded that the entire appointment process be private, meaning that both blocs be involved in appointing committees and selecting candidates. However, Blue and White did not agree to this, and
the government's approval comes after Interior Minister Amir Ohana informed them about two weeks ago that their tenure would be extended. Ohana informed Cohen and Loknin that he would approve the extension of his term as deputy for another six months. The
acting commissioner of police said, before Ohana's announcement, in a conversation with district commanders that "in light of the political situation and the decisions made, it appears that in the near future no permanent commissioner will be appointed to the Israel Police."
Cohen added that "in order to maintain organizational stability and the understanding that at this time continuity is required in the processes taking place in the organization, I will continue to lead the police in the role of MM until a different decision."
Cohen addressed the commanders and clarified that "I expect you We are sensitive and united so that together we can carry out the significant tasks that lie on the shoulders of the police at this time. "
