New York (CNN Business) -

Disney will lay off 28,000 employees in the United States as the coronavirus pandemic hits its parks and resorts business.

The cuts will affect Disney's Parks, Experiences and Products unit.

The company said 67% of the laid off employees will be part-time workers.

Disney's parks and resorts division has more than 100,000 employees in the United States.

Global shutdown due to pandemic

Disney theme parks closed globally in the first months of the year due to the pandemic.

This was a huge blow to the company's bottom line.

The company's profits fell a whopping 91% during the first three months of 2020.

Josh D'Amaro, president of Disney Parks, said the staff cuts were necessary because of the "prolonged impact" of the coronavirus on business.

That included "limited capacity due to physical distance requirements and continued uncertainty regarding the duration of the pandemic."

"As difficult as this decision is today, we believe that the steps we are taking will allow us to emerge a more effective and efficient operation when we return to normal," said D'Amaro.

D'Amaro added that Disney employees have always "been key to our success, playing a valuable and important role in delivering a world-class experience."

"We look forward to providing opportunities where we can for them to come back," he said.

They blame California too

D'Amaro also blamed the state of California for its "unwillingness to lift the restrictions that would allow Disneyland to reopen."

Disneyland and California Adventure, the company's flagship California resorts, have been closed since March.

The California governor's office did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Disney originally planned to reopen the Anaheim, California-based resort on July 17, but the reopening was delayed indefinitely.

What about Disney World and its employees?

Disney World, the company's Florida resort, also closed its doors in March, but began a gradual reopening of its parks in July.

The resort reopened its doors with security protocols and health measures.

These included reducing capacity at their parks and requiring all employees and guests to wear face masks.

Disney notified its workers in April that due to the coronavirus it would put out of work employees "whose jobs are not needed at this time" as of April 19.

"As you can imagine, a decision of this magnitude is not easy," D'Amaro wrote in a memo to employees obtained by CNN Business.

“We have cut expenses, suspended capital projects, discharged our cast members while continuing to pay benefits, and modified our operations to run as efficiently as possible, yet we simply cannot keep our full staff responsibly while We operate at such a limited capacity. '

Disney has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic in many ways, but its theme parks and resort business have arguably taken the biggest hit of all.

Disney's parks unit, which raised more than $ 26 billion in fiscal 2019, was crushed during the second quarter of this year.

The segment's operating profit fell 58% compared to the previous year and Disney reported a loss of $ 1 billion in profits just weeks after the global health crisis began.
