Facebook announced today that it will begin replacing Instagram's direct messaging service with a version of its Messenger app, the first big step in its plan to connect messaging across its suite of apps.
Reuters quoted the company as saying in a statement today that this step will allow users of the two applications to communicate with the other service, exchange messages and make video calls with it without having to download the other application.
The company stated that the step will be initially launched today in a few countries, which have not been identified, and that it will be implemented in the rest of the world soon.
Mark Zuckerberg, the company's CEO, first announced the vision for messaging between applications earlier this year, as the company ultimately seeks to integrate WhatsApp and extend the end-to-end encryption technology to include the three services.
