2020-09-30T06:44:46.197Z

Spared for the moment by the 28,000 job cuts in the group, the European destination of the American leisure giant is struggling

The announcement is not reassuring.

And even if it does not concern today the 14,620 employees on permanent contracts of Disneyland Paris, the hotel and leisure complex located in Marne-la-Vallée (Seine-et-Marne) since 1992, it should necessarily cause great concern. in the coming hours and days in the wings of the amusement park.

Tuesday evening, around 11 p.m. in France, in the afternoon in the United States, several American media revealed the contents of the press release by Josh D'Amaro, who chairs activities including amusement parks, cruises, l event and related products within The Walt Disney Company (TWDC), the parent company of the global Disney entertainment and cinema group.

It announces a vast social plan for the group's employees in the United States.

Hit hard by the Covid-19 epidemic, the company with 223,000 employees at the end of 2019 across the world in its six parks in California or Florida in the United States, Tokyo in Japan, Shanghai in China, Hong Kong and finally Disneyland Paris has just announced the layoff of 28,000 people, or 12.5% of the total workforce, in its two American parks: Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

The first has not reopened since mid-March while the second reopened in July with a limited gauge.

Colossal financial losses

Most of the American employees concerned now work part-time (67%).

The decision comes from "the prolonged impact of Covid-19 on our business, including capacity reductions at sites, in connection with physical distancing, and uncertainties over the duration of the pandemic", explained TWDC in its communicated.

From April to June 2020, Disney raked in $ 11.8 billion in revenue, half the amount of a year ago.

In the third quarter of its staggered fiscal year, the entertainment empire posted a net loss of $ 4.7 billion.

Over the same period, parks and events activity plunged 85% to $ 983 million.

“For the past several months, our human resources team has worked tirelessly to avoid having to separate ourselves from anyone,” added Josh D'Amaro.

We have cut expenses, suspended important projects, laid off actors and made our operations more efficient, but we cannot keep all of our employees by opening with such limited capacity.

No social plan at present at Disneyland Paris

In France, the situation is also gloomy.

Since the reopening on July 15, after four months closed the gates, attendance has not taken off.

The destination, at the forefront of sanitary conditions against the pandemic, fails to bring back its visitors, and in particular foreigners.

The classification by several countries of Île-de-France in the red zone, with compulsory testing and isolation for returns to Germany, Italy, England or Belgium, does not encourage the arrival of these tourists, who are nevertheless used to the park.

According to our information, the management of Euro Disney has planned to reassure its troops very quickly to assure them that measures have been put in place on the destination in order to preserve them from such drastic measures observed in the United States.

And that they are, at present, sheltered from any social plan.

But lately the signals are not good on the destination.

The Cheyenne Hotel will close its doors this week.

The Newport Bay Club and the Santa Fe will be the only hotels open within the Seine-et-Marne complex.

Sign that attendance is at half mast.

The shows, which briefly resumed this summer, are once again at a complete standstill.

And partial unemployment, which still concerns many employees, could further expand in the weeks and months to come.

And finally, no one, apart from senior Euro Disney staff, expected today to receive such news from across the Atlantic ...

More information to come ...
