2020-10-01T05:08:52.622Z

It is one of the most important items of expenditure for French households, which are nearly 85% to own at least one car. Our dossier

New or used, petrol or electric, insurance… Owning a car represents a high investment: at least 5,000 euros per year, or even much more depending on the model.

Indeed, if the French spend 20% of their expenses on their housing (including heating and lighting), their 2nd expense item is that of transport, with 10.7% of their budget in 2018, according to the study by the 'Insee on household consumption.

84.9% of households own a car and almost a third (31.2%) have two.

A significant budget when buying a vehicle, which gets heavier every year with maintenance, the cost of insurance and repairs.

Even if "less than 4% of the 29 million French households buy a new car," says Guillaume Paoli, co-founder of Aramisauto.

Between 2015 and 2019, the barometer of the comparator Lelynx.fr notes that car premiums jumped by 12%.

“According to traditional insurance professionals, the cost of repairs to increasingly technologically sophisticated cars, and increasingly frequent climatic events, explain this increase,” summarizes Christophe Dandois, co-founder of the comparator Leocare.

Result: insuring your car costs an average of 632 euros (all formulas combined) in 2020. A budget that varies greatly depending on your profile and your needs and on which it is always possible to save.

Save and make profitable

This is not the only position where you can earn some precious euros.

Ecological bonuses, conversion bonuses… there are many public aids to buy a less polluting vehicle at a lower cost.

It is also possible to make your car profitable: rental, carpooling, transport of parcels or advertising stickers are all small incomes that help reduce the overall bill.

Each year, the Automobile Club Association (ACA) publishes a file on the full cost of a car to its owner.
