Terror,
thriller
, comedy, adventure, conspiracies, politics… October brings, again, a good arsenal of television news, so many that the selection forces to leave out several interesting titles.
Among the options that we present below are the long-awaited fourth season of
Fargo
, a policeman with a Spanish stamp with the direction of Rodrigo Sorogoyen, new adventures for the Disney Mandalorian or a
thriller
that brings together Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant.
Of all the premieres and comebacks in October (which you can check in our calendar), we recommend giving this selection a try.
Fargo
Three years later, a new season of the series created by Noah Hawley and based on the universe created by the Coen brothers finally premieres.
Another new false true story that in this case is set in Kansas City in 1950 and stars Chris Rock.
To seal ties between the great mafias that dominate the city, the tradition of the place dictates that the leaders of each group exchange their first-born children and raise them as if they were their own.
Everything goes well for years until it stops going well.
In the vein of previous installments, the plot mixes black comedy and
thriller
that, in this case, is combined with a peculiar look at race and identity.
Where and when to see it?
It opens on Thursday 1 in Movistar Seriesmanía.
The woodpecker
Another different look at the issue of race is offered by this period miniseries that delves into the rise of abolitionism in 19th century North America since comedy.
Ethan Hawke is the creator and protagonist of this series based on a novel by James McBride that tells the story of Cebolla, a young African-American slave who unwittingly joins the side of the abolitionist John Brown.
To try to escape from his liberator and not participate in the armed confrontations, Cebolla pretends to be a girl.
The first critics emphasize the good translation of the satire of the original novel to the television and the work of Hawke.
Where and when to see it?
In Movistar Series, on Monday 5 in simulcast with the US.
The curse of Bly Manor
After the wonderful
Curse of Hill House,
Mike Flanagan's series becomes an anthology of independent stories about haunted houses and goes from adapting the writer Shirley Jackson to Henry James and his
Another Turn of the Screw, in
addition to other tales with ghosts by the same author.
A young woman who wants to turn her life around to escape a recent traumatic past is hired to work as a babysitter for two orphaned siblings whose previous babysitter died under strange circumstances.
Upon arriving at Bly Manor, the young woman will discover that the mansion hides secrets and presences from the past.
Ghosts, romance and drama come together in a story that in its previews already shows the tone of gothic horror for which it is committed.
Flanagan himself has already advanced that he recovers the narrative as a puzzle with pieces that fit together little by little.
So far we can read for now.
Where and when to see it?
The nine chapters premiere on the 9th on Netflix.
Ladies of (h) AMPA
After managing to end the dangerous gang that Carmona led, Mayte, Lourdes, Virginia and Amparo decide to take justice into their own hands and maintain a double life as masked superheroines who fight the criminals of the neighborhood while maintaining the Association for Women Begoña Cepeda and they try to get on with their personal lives.
The first season of this Spanish series was already revealed as an entertaining and risky bet applauded by critics and that managed to make good use of its characteristic black humor, which will surely also be present in the new episodes.
Where and when to see it?
The second season will premiere on Friday 16 on Amazon Prime Video before it is seen, at least in six months, on Telecinco.
Riot gear
The excellent state of form of the national television fiction is confirmed with the premiere this month of this series written by Isabel Peña and Rodrigo Sorogoyen and directed by Sorogoyen, six chapters that start as a
police
thriller
that follows the eviction in a Madrid corrala to which A riot control van arrives but it is complicated by a death.
From the investigation carried out by the internal affairs department of the police, a corruption plot with more tentacles is revealed.
Pay attention to the critics: a very good series, with a very good script, an excellent direction and great performances that is nominated as one of the best series of the year.
Where and when to see it?
The six episodes will premiere on Friday, October 16 on Movistar +.
Someone has to die
Carmen Maura is the most prominent name on the great poster (which also includes Ernesto Alterio, Cecilia Suárez, Ester Expósito, Carlos Cuevas and Alejandro Speitzer) of this miniseries created and directed by Manolo Caro (
The house of flowers
).
The action takes place in the conservative and traditional Spain of the fifties.
A young man returns from Mexico to meet the fiancee that his parents have sought for him.
But when he arrives in his town, he will cause surprise when he appears accompanied by Lázaro, a ballet dancer.
It has enough wickers to show off, although the result will have to be seen.
Where and when to see it?
Its three chapters will premiere on Netflix on the 16th.
Comey's law
To heat up the US elections (in case they weren't already warm enough ...) comes this four-chapter miniseries based on the book written by former FBI Director James Comey about his tense relationship with Donald Trump.
In the first two episodes the plot focuses on the past elections, those that brought the tycoon and politician to the White House, while the next two delve into the first months of the mandate and the clash of personalities and perspectives between Trump and Comey.
Very interesting for the times and to see the interpretations of Jeff Daniels as Comey and Brendan Gleeson as Trump.
Where and when to see it?
Movistar Series broadcasts it on two nights, on October 20 and 27.
The Undoing
Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant star in this six-episode miniseries that also has big names behind the scenes, with Susanne Bier (
The Infiltrator)
as director and David E. Kelley (
Big Little Lies
) as screenwriter.
Kidman plays Grace Fraser, the wife of a renowned doctor whose life takes a turn when one of the mothers of the elite school where her son attends is found murdered after the two of them have coincided on several occasions in the previous hours.
The investigation of that death will uncover a series of secrets that will turn Grace's life upside down.
A
thriller
that tries to hook for its plot and its interpreters.
Where and when to see it?
It premieres on HBO Spain on Monday 26.
The Mandalorian
The Mandalorian behind whose helmet Pedro Pascal and the Boy (also known as Baby Yoda) are hidden continue to travel a galaxy far, far away while having adventures in the Disney + star series (and practically their only great asset in original production, until the moment).
Although we still don't know much about the second season beyond the trailer, it seems pretty clear that we can expect more high-level action, adventures in the purest western style and an overall good production that comes with seven Emmy Awards under its arm and a nomination. for best drama of the year.
Nothing bad.
Where and when to see it?
Premiere on Friday 30 with weekly broadcast.
Utopia
American
remake
of the 2013 British series about a group of comic book fans who supposedly anticipated the misfortunes of the future.
Gillian Flynn (
Lost, Open Wounds)
is in charge of this adaptation as a screenwriter and
showrunner
, with actors such as John Cusack and Rainn Wilson in its cast.
The original quickly became a cult series for its tangled and conspiracy plot, its ultraviolence, its staging with saturated colors and a brilliant soundtrack signed by Cristobal Tapia de Veer.
The
remake
has had a discreet reception that is skeptical by American critics.
We include it in this list out of curiosity to see if such a
remake
really made sense
and if it manages to add something new to what has already been seen.
Where and when to see it?
On Amazon Prime Video on the 30th.
Death in Salisbury
British miniseries based on a real case.
On March 4, 2018, a man and a woman who were sitting on a bench in a park in the small town of Salisbury suddenly lose consciousness.
This is Sergei Skripal, a former Russian military intelligence officer who worked as a double agent for MI6, which sets off alarms.
Within hours of searching Skripal's house, Detective Nick Bailey begins to feel ill.
The police investigation points to a possible poisoning by a lethal nerve agent developed by the USSR in the 1970s.
The poison has spread throughout the city and the entire population is at risk.
Perhaps it is not the most appropriate plot in times of pandemic, is it?
But the story is interesting and the overall result quite good.
