Microsoft's Surface line is known for its premium design, and so far, with few exceptions, premium pricing too. But the Surface Laptop | CNNE Underscored | CNN

Microsoft's Surface line is known for its premium design, and so far, with few exceptions, premium pricing too.

But the Surface Laptop Go, the company's latest laptop, breaks this scheme and like the Surface Go tablet, it boasts the same great design from the range at a very low price, which starts at $ 549.

There are also some newer Surface Pro X models with the same design, but with a new platinum color and a new processor.

And before we forget, new accessories with a fantastic design.

The Surface Laptop Go is available to pre-order now and will begin shipping on October 13.

The upgraded Surface Pro X also ships October 13 and is available starting at $ 999.

Let's take a look at them.

Surface Laptop Go

This laptop has a 12.4-inch PixelSense touchscreen, instead of the 13.5-inch on the Surface Laptop 3. But the design looks pretty close, with little bezels around the screen and an aluminum cover.

It is also available in blue, sandstone, or platinum.

There's a 720p webcam just above the screen, with long-range microphones that should enhance the overall audio for video calls.

It also includes a USB-A port and a USB-C port.

The Laptop Go lacks a Windows Hello camera (Microsoft's face unlock feature) but has a fingerprint reader that is hidden in the power button.

A full keyboard with a wide trackpad and the touch capabilities and Surface Pen support we're used to.

Inside the Surface Laptop Go beats a 10th-generation Core i5 processor from Intel.

The base model comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of eMMC storage.

However, this is important, that model lacks the fingerprint reader.

The biggest question we have about the Laptop Go will be the performance difference between the base model and those with more RAM and an SSD for storage.

Based on previous experience with the Surface Go, its eMMC storage and slower processor might be slow enough to justify spending a bit more on the next higher model.

We will soon know.

You can increase the specs to 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD, with fingerprint reader, for $ 699.99, or 8GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD for $ 899.99.

We recommend the $ 699.99 model to start with, especially for the 128GB of storage.

Business customers will have the option to increase RAM to 16GB.

According to Microsoft, the battery of the Laptop Go lasts 13 hours of use;

An impressive number for a compact notebook, but one that we will have to prove to be believed.

Remember that you can order it now and you should receive it around October 13.

Surface Pro X

Another announcement that Microsoft has made today is a new configuration of the Surface Pro X. This is not a new model, but you will have the option to buy the Surface Pro X with a new processor, Microsoft's SQ 2 ARM processor.

There is also a new platinum color.

Microsoft debuted its first ARM processor last year.

However, since not all applications are designed to run on this type of processor, the Pro X currently offers poor performance and poor application compatibility at the moment.

The original Surface Pro X still starts at $ 999, but you'll have to pay a premium to get the new SQ 2 processor model, which starts at $ 1,499.99.

In addition to the new models with a faster processor, the entire Surface Pro X line has received several updates and software enhancements.

For example, the Pro X's battery should now last 15 hours, instead of 13 hours.

Microsoft also announced that the Pro X will get greater application compatibility through emulation tools.

It's the same approach that Apple is going to take with Apple Silicon, which we expect to see on Mac computers this year.

New Surface accessories

Microsoft also revealed some new accessories for its Surface suite of products and they are gorgeous.

There's the new $ 69.99 Designer Compact Keyboard that offers quick switching between up to 3 devices and a battery life of up to 2 years.

There's also a new wireless number pad for Excel junkies that costs $ 24.99.

If you're looking for the best way to connect your Surface to a 4K display, the new $ 69.99 4K Wireless Display Adapter will get the job done.

There's also a new ergonomic mouse that connects to your Surface via Bluetooth and features two customizable buttons.

It will go on sale for $ 49.99.
