5G mobile network expansion in Hausham: City council remains skeptical

The concern about further cell towers for the 5G expansion also radiates into the community of Hausham.

The Greens have now requested a clear positioning in the local council.

Hausham

- "We don't want something to be imposed on us," said applicant Harda von Poser (Greens).

According to her, the telecommunications companies want to upgrade the twelve existing masts in the community of Hausham and "install several more antennas".

Von Poser and her group colleagues Willi Halletz and Sascha Privitera want to prevent this.

In its motion, the parliamentary group called for the local council to take a clear position against the 5G expansion.

The effects on humans, animals and plants have not been adequately researched, argued Poser.

“Higher frequencies lead to increased radiation exposure.” The consequences could be tumors, effects on sperm and insect death.

"The population has not been adequately informed about this."

Mayor Jens Zangenfeind (FWG) pointed out that the municipality only had limited influence on the plans of the network operators.

It is true that one can decide on the construction on community-owned land, but one has no say in private locations.

5G in the Miesbach district: That is planned

Thomas Danzer (SPD) questioned the critical attitude of the Greens.

"Every working person and every student needs the Internet." Fast connections are necessary, especially to secure jobs in the region.

Hubert Lacrouts (CSU) shared Danzer's view.

“Of course, we have to be considerate of our citizens, but we mustn't fall by the wayside.” In Austria and Switzerland, even in the mountains, there is a mobile phone network everywhere - in Hausham one is already “behind”.

Lacrouts would therefore like to "view 5G critically, but not discard it".

“It is much more important to sensitize the public,” said Ria Röpfl (FWG).

This could be done through public discussions in the local council - a wish that the Greens parliamentary group had also expressed in their motion.

Zangenfeind saw this proposal as problematic.

"We have to discuss contractual matters in accordance with the requirements in the non-public part."

Poser argued that citizens need more education.

"In Germany a thousand times higher radiation exposure is allowed than in Vienna." In addition, there is no insurance for owners who have stations built on their property - although liability issues in the event of damage to health could fall back on them.

The council members decided unanimously to be critical of the network expansion.

The municipal council will - as far as this is permissible - make public decisions on specific inquiries in connection with the expansion of the 5G network.

Corporations do not yet have precise plans

At the request of our newspaper, the network operators denied - at least in part - the rumors about the upgrading or new installation of cell phone masts in Hausham.

Telefonica press spokesman Jörg Borm explains that O2 currently only operates one cell phone location on Industriestrasse in Hausham.

“From there we supply the community core with the GSM, UMTS and LTE standards.” An expansion to 5G is - at least this year - “not planned”.

Mathias Brandes, Head of Corporate Communications at United Internet, says: "1 & 1 Drillisch does not yet have its own mobile network and therefore does not have its own masts." The expansion of the 5G network is planned, but the company is currently still in negotiations with other network operators.

According to company spokesman Volker Petendorf, Vodafone plans to bring 5G to the Miesbach district.

In Hausham, the group has been operating two of the 50 Vodafone mobile radio stations in the Miesbach district to date.

“Both have LTE, so that 99.9 percent of the populated areas are connected to both the cellular network and the LTE network.” The two Haushamer stations “should not be upgraded to 5G before mid-2021”.

Because: In the district, 5G should first go into operation at the four stations Waakirchen, Kreuth, Gmund and Tegernsee.

A telecom mast in Hausham has been broadcasting the 5G standard since the end of July 2020.

The spokesman for corporate communications, Markus Jodl, says: "You can't see it because neither a new mast was built for it, nor a new antenna installed." The new cellular standard is here - like 3G and 4G - on the 2100 megahertz frequency broadcast.

"There are currently no plans to set up further locations in Hausham."
