Of those, Johnson was the most seriously ill after testing positive for the virus in late March.

He spent a week in the hospital, with three nights in intensive care and, upon being released from the hospital, said that "things could have gone anyway" for him.

Even after leaving the hospital, he had to spend time recovering at his official country residence, Checkers.

Johnson's disease, at the height of Britain's first wave of infections, complicated the government's response, not least as the virus spread through government ranks in Westminster.

Trump and his wife Melania, who also tested positive for the virus, may be asymptomatic or have only mild symptoms, as was the case with British Health Minister Matt Hancock.

How does covid-19 affect Trump's health?

4:42

At 74 years old and overweight, Trump, who has spent months downplaying the severity of the pandemic as deaths in the United States surpassed 207,000, is in the category at greatest risk of serious complications from the disease.

But the 50-year-old first lady is likely to have a lower risk of serious illness.

Johnson tweeted his best wishes to Trump and the first lady, saying that he hoped that "they will both recover quickly from the coronavirus."

The president and first lady of the United States can expect to receive the best care the country has to offer.

But some fear that the whole picture is not being given.

Even when the British Prime Minister was in hospital, the daily briefings in Downing Street cheerfully proclaimed that he was in a "good mood" when, in fact, according to Johnson's own account, the situation was significantly more dire.

Contempt for masks and physical distancing

In Brazil, populist leader Bolsonaro spent months downplaying the coronavirus threat, like Trump, dismissing it as a "little flu" and assuring his compatriots that they had little to fear.

The 65-year-old has also shown disdain for precautions such as wearing masks and social distancing, both before and since his positive test in early July.

Less than two weeks after testing positive, Bolsonaro took a walk on the grounds of his presidential palace and greeted a crowd of supporters, a video broadcast live on his Facebook page showed.

While the president of Brazil wore a mask, he was closely flanked by several advisers who did not seem to constantly maintain a significant physical distance from him.

He repeatedly lowered his mask as he spoke, even when advisers were nearby.

Others in his government were also affected by the virus.

Two Brazilian ministers and three other high-ranking government officials confirmed that they had also tested positive before the end of July.

Brazil is among the countries most affected by covid-19, only surpassed by the United States in the number of deaths, with more than 144,000 registered, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University.

The UK has the fifth highest number of coronavirus deaths on record in the world, with over 42,000.

Some polls suggest that Johnson and Bolsonaro received a small boost in public support after their coronavirus disease.

Increase in approval after illness

Polling organization YouGov tweeted on Friday that Johnson saw a second small increase in his already rising personal approval rating, from 54% to 60%, specifically after his hospitalization.

However, this was not the case for his government, which had already seen an increase in support four days before its positive test, YouGov said.

Johnson's personal approval rating had fallen to 35% as of Sept. 28, according to the YouGov poll.

In August, a month after his own positive test, Bolsonaro recorded the highest approval rate for his government since the beginning of his term in January 2019, according to a poll by Datafolha, Brazil's largest opinion polling institute. .

The survey indicated that 37% of Brazilians considered Bolsonaro's government "good or excellent" in August, 5% more than in the previous survey in July.

Concern for Trump and Biden advisers

It's unclear how many White House staff or senior Republican figures will have to isolate themselves after coming into contact with Trump or those close to him.

The president had said Thursday night that he planned to self-quarantine after one of his closest aides, Hope Hicks, tested positive for the infection, bringing the disease to his inner circle.

While the White House frequently touts its extensive testing regimen for the president and those who approach him (his aides have called him the "most tested man in the country"), infections have underscored the shortcomings of relying solely on the tests to prevent contagion.

In May, two White House employees, including a member of the Navy who serves as one of Trump's personal advisers, tested positive for the virus, and in July a cafeteria employee on the White House grounds also it tested positive.

The president confirmed a fourth positive case on the White House grounds last month.

There will also be concern in the field of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden that he may have been exposed to the virus.

He and Trump shared the stage Tuesday night in the first presidential debate, an event characterized by moody shouts, in which Trump mocked Biden for wearing a mask frequently.

Biden and his wife, Jill, wished the Trumps a "speedy recovery" in a tweet on Friday.

"We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the President and his family," Biden said.
