The Community Organization Association announced today (4th) an investigation report on unsuitable housing rents.
The study found that the average rent for a bed unit with a median area of only 18 square feet increased from 91.6 yuan to 105.6 yuan, a higher increase than other private housing units.
If calculated on the basis of rent per square foot, the rent per square foot of a bed unit is more than double the rent per square foot of a large Class D unit (100 to 159.9 square meters) announced by the Assessment Department.
The survey also found that the overall rent of the interviewed households accounted for 39% of their income. Nearly half of the interviewees reported that they had been increased in rent in the past three years, and some people had been increased by a maximum of 1,100 yuan in one go.
In mid-to-late September this year, the Social Association conducted an online questionnaire survey of unsuitable households and collected more than 400 questionnaires.
The survey found that more than half of the units lacked basic sanitation facilities. Although 39% of the units had kitchens and toilets, they were in the same location. 40% of the units lacked natural ventilation and natural light.

The Social Association compared the data in September 2019 and August 2020 and found that for a bed unit with a median area of only 18 square feet, the average rent per square foot increased from 91.6 yuan to 105.6 yuan, an increase of up to 15%.

The Social Association pointed out that most of the grassroots are facing unemployment or underemployment due to the impact of the epidemic. Therefore, even if the rents remain at the same level, their affordability is much lower than before.
