The new crown pneumonia epidemic has lasted for more than half a year. Many schools in Hong Kong have responded with online learning. Although learning can be sustained, many grassroots students have to face many difficulties, which affect their learning progress. A social worker from a community service center said that some people seeking help had poor family finances and could not afford the cost of purchasing computer equipment. Others had a crowded family environment, which made it difficult to have learning space. Even if they had no internet at home, they could only use the neighbor’s network to teach. The Hong Kong Innovation Fund and Sino Group launched the "One Person, One Computer" project in August to provide online learning support for families in need. The project received a total of more than 2,300 applications, of which 1,019 applications were successfully given a laptop computer. After some grass-roots students received a computer, they realized that they could see their classmates on the computer and it was more convenient to download files.

Others had a crowded family environment, which made it difficult to have learning space. Even if they had no internet at home, they could only use the neighbor’s network to teach.

Primary school children have more difficulties in online learning

Huang Ewei, a social worker at the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Jockey Club Tai Kok Tsui Integrated Service Center, said that since the epidemic, many cases of assistance have been encountered, and that grassroots students have encountered many difficulties in online learning.

She said that there have been cases where parents work night shifts at home, and the space at home is too tight. When children learn online, they will affect family rest. Some cases have no computers and internet at home, and can only use mobile phones and data cards to study, which is less effective.

She also pointed out that grassroots parents are also troubled by online learning, especially when they encounter technical problems, they are very at a loss and have nowhere to ask for help.

Grassroots schoolchildren have no internet at home and old computers are difficult to cope with online teaching

The 12-year-old Wanwan has encountered many difficulties in online learning in the past six months.

She lives with her mother. She has no computer at home and can only use her mobile phone to attend classes.

There has never been a wireless network at home. At first, I could only rely on the data card connection, the signal reception was poor, and the line was often disconnected. Finally, I could only use the network of the neighbor's home to surf the Internet.

She said that online learning is not as effective as face-to-face teaching, especially in the math and English classes, "I don’t know what to do but I don’t have to ask the teacher.

Also in the new school year, Qiqi, who is from a grassroots family, has been studying on her mobile phone since the epidemic.

Although she has a computer at home, she bought it in kindergarten and cannot use it for online learning.

My parents considered buying a computer, but the expenditure of a few thousand dollars is still daunting.

The program received more than 2,300 applications, and 1,019 applications successfully received a laptop computer.

In addition, the Baptist University also recruited 50 students to help students solve technical and learning problems from 5 to 8 pm every Monday to Friday.
