Confident despite being an outsider: Norbert Röttgen sees himself in a good position in the race for the office of CDU chief.
"I think we have now reached a situation in which we are at eye level, in which everyone can be voted," said Röttgen according to the "Rheinischer Post" at the newspaper's "Ständehaus Treff" in Düsseldorf.
In the talk format in front of around 500 guests - because of Corona not in the eponymous Ständehaus, but in the Düsseldorf stadium - Röttgen said that equal opportunities with Armin Laschet and Friedrich Merz was the change that had occurred in the three to four weeks after the summer break.
When asked by the editor-in-chief, Moritz Döbler, who he would vote for in the second ballot, Röttgen simply said: "I'm concentrating on getting through to the second ballot."
On the subject of the chancellorship, Röttgen said, according to the "Rheinischer Post": "I'm running for the CDU chairmanship first."
That is an important task in its own right.
Röttgen emphasized that he was not running for this office in order to achieve the other.
At the same time, it is part of the CDU chairman's claim to be confident or willing to assume the office of chancellor, said Röttgen.
He came to the assessment: "I trust myself."
