The largest pocket predator in the world, the Tasmanian demon, was returned to the wild in the mainland of Australia for the first time in 3,000 years.

The release came along with the pair of famous actors, Chris Hamsworth and Elsa Pataki, who joined animal conservation groups last month and released with them 11 Tasmanian demons to a nature reserve in New South Wales, in south-eastern Australia.

Additional releases are planned in the future.

The demons, which are similar in size to those of a small dog, became famous with the appearance of the cartoon character named "Taz", a scary and wild Tasmanian demon who starred in the Looney Tunes series.

Tim Faulkner, president of the Aussie Ark Conservation Group, said it was "the first time in 3,000 years that a pocket predator has roamed the continental forests, it's extremely important for Australia's ecosystem rebuilding."

The Aussie Ark organization, which works to protect endangered predators by the UN in 2008, has partnered with global animal conservation organizations to implement the plan. Now, the organization breeds young Tasmanian demons and plans to release about 20 next year and 20 more the following year.

"This release is the first of many that will happen again," Faulkner said. "We have raised nearly 400 Tasmanian demons, and now we are at a point where we are able to return some of them to nature."

Hamsworth, best known as Thor In Marvel movies, he said, "We set some traps to catch the demons and then we released them into the wild."

The Tasmanian demons disappeared from the continent after being hunted by a dingo, a wild dog, and remained only on the island of Tasmania, adjacent to the continent.

But even there they have dwindled since the 1990s because of an illness from which they began to suffer.

"The rate of mammal extinction in Australia is the worst in the world and the return of species will help rebalance the ecology affected by the introduction of invasive predator species," Faulkner said.
