A U.S. court has ordered Iran to pay $ 1.45 billion to the family of former FBI agent Robert Levinson, who disappeared while in the country in 2007. U.S. authorities and his family believe he died in Iran, claiming he arrested him, but she denies it.

In a statement issued yesterday (Monday) by his family, they claimed that the verdict handed down on Thursday in Washington court by Judge Timothy Kelly was the "first step in the pursuit of justice."

"So far, Iran has not faced any consequences for its actions," they added.

"The judge's decision will not bring Robert home, but we hope it will deter Iran from taking more hostages."

Levinson disappeared while on the island of Kish in the Persian Gulf in March 2007. According to the US administration, the former agent worked there as a private investigator for several large corporations.

On the other hand, media outlets in the United States claim that he was on the island as part of a secret mission for the CIA, and that while on the island he met with David Salahudin, an American citizen who fled the country.

According to Salahudin, Levinson told him that he was investigating cigarette smuggling in the Gulf, and that after their meeting they were arrested by the Iranian security forces.

This is when in 2011 photos were sent to Levinson's family in which he was seen in orange overalls.

Then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she believed he was being held "somewhere in Southwest Asia."

Levinson's wife, Christine, said last year at a congressional hearing that he was "left behind and forgotten" by U.S. governments.

Earlier this year, FBI Director Christopher Ray told Levinson's family that "the most well-founded evidence we've gathered in the last 13 years indicates a high probability that Bob died in captivity."

However, he stressed that the FBI will not stop trying to find out what happened to the former agent.

At the same time, Iran reiterated its case, saying it had tried to find out about Levinson's condition "but found no sign that he was alive."

In his ruling, Judge Kelly said: "Iran's conduct here is unique. Especially given that she hid a former FBI and DEA agent without warning, tortured him and held him captive for so long, at least 13 years, and to this day she refuses to admit in so doing".

"His wife and children, and their spouses and children, while honoring Levinson's memory, were forced to go on with their lives without knowing what happened to him. In doing so, the acts deserve the most severe condemnation," he added.
