Animal welfare: breeders also in the crosshairs

Farmers criticize parliamentarians for tackling all species without distinction of breeding and for having ignored the efforts already undertaken.


The bill (PPL) carried by Cédric Villani and Mathieu Orphelin on animal welfare, which wants to put an end to intensive breeding in buildings, also risks affecting stud farms or mountain breeders.

The objective of these parliamentarians is

"to gradually transform farming practices with a view to only conserving practices that are compatible with respect for the biological requirements of animals"

.

To achieve this goal, they want to ensure the access of all farm animals to the open air and eliminate the places where they are confined: cages, sheds but also stalls or boxes.

"As a first step, the construction of any new livestock building that does not offer animals access to the outdoors adapted to their needs is prohibited"
