Which tree should be in which location?

The Farchant City Council had to deal with this question.

The consultation was intensive.

Farchant

- In beer gardens it is as much a part of it as light and pretzels.

A chestnut usually rises up in the middle of the seats.

A typical Bavarian tree, many believe.

A mistake, explained Michael Heintz.

The Romans brought them with them.

"And we incorporated them." Nevertheless, the tree was one of the candidates for the Farchanter Rathausplatz.

In the end, however, another giant made the race.

For Mayor Christian Hornsteiner (CSU) the time was ripe for the discussion about the planting in the area between the property Am Gern 1a and the parish church.

The work on the urban development program is progressing.

Faster than planned.

"The construction site changes every day."

Climate change must be taken into account

This is not the first time that the local council has dealt with trees.

Even for the design of Bahnhofstrasse, the committee was spoiled for choice, back then with different members.

But now the subject had to be tackled with even more care.

"It's about the heart", emphasized the expert Heintz from the commissioned office "Plankreis" in Munich.

He did not deliver a finished concept.

On purpose.

“There is not one perfect tree for every situation.” Instead, Heintz named his favorites and corresponding alternatives.

While the town hall chief would have liked to have followed a consistent line with native species, the planner also presented more foreign plants.

Because of climate change.

"It's getting warmer and drier."

Overall concept approved unanimously

Hornsteiner attached great importance to an intensive discussion.

After all, the new trees shape the appearance in the center of the village for 50 years in the worst case, and 300 in the best case.

"This is a decision for the next generations", the mayor made it unmistakably clear.

The municipal councils debated which tree species was suitable in which location for around 1.5 hours.

They did not always agree, but they unanimously adopted the overall concept.

The most important point was quickly identified: the town hall square.

A big eye-catcher is supposed to replace the older of the two ash trees.

“A linden tree would be most beautiful,” said Heintz.

Specifically, a winter linden tree.

The catch: it secretes honeydew.

If there are benches under the tree, the dirt sticks to them.

“That looks unsavory.” His plan B: a Hungarian silver linden tree that looks even lighter at roughly the same height of 20 to 25 meters.

“Stomach ache”, however, plagued him with the horse chestnut.

She likes to be attacked by the leaf miner.

The committee decided not only against this alternative, but also against the plane tree and the tulip tree.

The Hungarian Linden representative came to the train.

The tender is being prepared

The politicians, on the other hand, had different opinions on the adjacent green space.

Every suggestion - winter linden, plane tree, tulip tree, white chestnut - fell through at the first attempt.

In the second, the chestnut prevailed.

The town hall square will be surrounded by rock pears, a red chestnut will grow at the end of the chestnut avenue, two black cherries behind the fountain.

The streets will be adorned with two Norway maples, a whitebeam and a pine tree.

Anton Klöck (CSU) fought for the latter.

He wanted a conifer.

“Otherwise everything will be bare in autumn.” The community has a plum tree planted in the cottage garden.

With a clear majority (14: 2), the municipal council also decided on an oval shape for the alternating planting on the green area, which, according to Heintz, optically reduces the width of the street.

As a next step, the town hall administration is preparing the tender.

With four trees more than discussed in the meeting.

"We are thus covered for the work in 2021", explained Hornsteiner.

Otherwise the community would have to write again.

The committee has to talk about which species it should then be.
