Nature conservation versus alpine farming: A discussion about clearing work on the Hörnle is currently focusing on this.

Bad Kohlgrub - On the Hörnle, Bad Kohlgrub's local mountain, a wide variety of interests clash again and again.

Above all, the different leisure activities and the agricultural or forestry use sometimes lead to conflicts between those involved.

Now the area is coming back into focus: the occasion is a logging campaign in the Elmauberg - Hinteres Hörnle area.

The alpine pastures there are owned by the Hörnle alpine pasture community.

When Georg Wojciak was walking there recently towards the summit of the Hinteres Hörnle, he noticed that a large number of trees had been felled on the terrain: “I am shocked how it looks there now.

A wonderful piece of nature has been flattened here. ”Kohlgruber even speaks of“ natural destruction ”.

Until recently there was only one path there, now there is not much to see of the forest on the Elmauberg.

For Wojciak, the logging campaign is “an insane expense that is disproportionate to the economic return.” In addition, a path has been built into the slope to develop the cleared area.

Confronted with criticism, the chairman of the Kohlgruber Alm- und Pasture Community, Josef Fischer, emphasizes that there was an open pasture on Elmauberg around 30 years ago.

However, this has grown over the course of time.

“By cutting down we created a new pasture area that we need for our alpine cattle.

It is a compensatory measure in the context of the separation of forest and pasture, ”says Fischer, explaining the action taken by the Hörnlerechtler.

After all, there are a lot of young cattle, cows and horses on the Hörnle pastures again this year, around 80 animals.

According to its own statement, the board is happy to declare itself ready to carry out an on-site inspection with interested parties “to explain the measure and necessity to them”.

By the way: According to Fischer, economic aspects did not play a role in the campaign, the felled trees were not suitable as timber: "We made wood chips out of them."
