Jewish life in Halle: behind the wooden door

2020-10-07T23:08:44.674Z

With the fall of the Wall, around 200,000 Jews came to Germany from the former Soviet Union. They revitalized the communities - including those in Halle. After the attack, the question arises: does Jewish life have to withdraw?

It is quiet when Max Privorozki unlocks the synagogue.

The tall man takes off his coat and sits on the chair by the door, right in front of the screen.

He looks at ten meters of the street, the live stream of the surveillance camera.

On October 9, 2019, he observed on this screen how the assassin Stephan B. first shot at the front door and then at Jana L. before moving on to kill a second person.

Inside, they barricaded the door with chairs and tables.

Now the street is empty.

Only occasionally do passers-by stop and stare at the bullet holes.

Others stand in front of the door and take selfies.

"It's a bit like the Brandenburg Gate here," jokes Privorozki.

Then a group walks into the picture, red scarves glow.

The SPD is there.

One of the youngest is running ahead: Igor Matviyets.

He is not only a member of the SPD, but also part of the Jewish community.

Matviyets and Privorozki greet each other as warmly as it is in times of Corona.
