- History lessons can be pretty boring.

That's what Kristina Tschamler thought during her school days.

However, her view of historical relationships has changed significantly in the past year: The 19-year-old Eurasburger worked for a year as a federal volunteer (Bufdi) in the memorial bathhouse on Kolpingplatz in Waldram - and has long been captivated by the history of the place.

History: These are not just years

What does she take away from her mission?

That behind each epoch there are people and their personal stories.

“I was particularly gripped by the individual fates,” she says, “the people behind the objects and the places.

To find out what these people have experienced and how that has changed their view of the world. ”This is also instructive for everyday life:“ I think you become more empathetic and sensitive when you deal with fate like this. ” Seeing strangers on the street, they regularly find themselves asking: "What have these people experienced?"

What did these people experience?

In the bathhouse, the focus is much more on personalities than in galleries with hundreds of exhibits and dusty, dry food. Another specialty is that some contemporary witnesses are still alive and help shape the museum.

They experienced the camp for displaced persons from which the district grew.

When Tschamler was working in Waldram, “people from Hamburg and Berlin stood in front of me and told me what connects them with this place”.

The 19-year-old admits that it got emotional.

“The work with the history that is done here is something completely different than rummaging through the exam material for exams in school,” says Tschamler.

"You can feel the stories, not just reproduce them."

Her one-year commitment naturally included more than just studying exciting résumés.

Tschamler got to know the office organization, the coordination of events and the association work.

Things that will help her on the next stage of her career: The 19-year-old started training as an office management assistant in a large Geretsried company in September.

Even after her voluntary year is over, Tschamler regularly visits the place of remembrance.

And sometimes, if she is lucky, she discovers a fate that she has not yet heard of - and her newfound pleasure in history is awakened.
