After two decades of progress, the pandemic is causing a disastrous turn back.
For the first time in more than twenty years, the global rate of extreme poverty is expected to increase in 2020, predicts the World Bank.
The fault, of course, lies with the Covid-19 epidemic, which particularly affects vulnerable populations and less developed countries.

The biennial report on "Poverty and Sharing Prosperity" released Wednesday estimates that the pandemic could push 88 to 115 million more people into extreme poverty this year.
This figure could reach 150 million in 2021, if the economic crisis is severe.
"Extreme poverty, the threshold of which is set at less than $ 1.90 per day, should thus affect 9.1% to 9.4% of the world population in 2020",
anticipates the bank.
Between 2015 and 2017, 52 million people were lifted out of extreme poverty, so that three years ago this statistic had fallen to 9.2%.
