A judge of the National Court of Justice of Ecuador asked Interpol on Tuesday to issue a red notice against former President Rafael Correa, to serve his 8-year prison sentence for the crime of bribery corresponding to the Bribery case 2012-2016.

The ex-president, who has resided in Belgium since 2017, described the decision on his Twitter account as "new ridicule for Ecuador."

“We will have to spend again on lawyers, travel limitations, etc.

This is how they seek to break us, ”added Correa, who ruled the country for 10 years.

According to the Interpol website, a red notice "is a request to law enforcement agencies around the world to locate and provisionally detain a person pending extradition, surrender or similar legal action."

According to Interpol, the red broadcast is broadcast “on fugitives wanted for prosecution or to serve a sentence”.

The ruling against Correa was ratified by a tribunal of the National Court after a cassation hearing on September 7.

The former president of Ecuador has always denied the accusations and has insisted that he will go to international bodies.

According to the ruling, Correa and the other convicts were part of a criminal organization to illegally receive money from Odebrecht and other companies to finance their political movement in exchange for the execution of contracts for works.

According to the judge in the case, several of the convicted would be outside of Ecuador.
