Two scientists from France and the United States today (Wednesday) won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for developing a method for genome editing known as CRISPR.

Researchers Emanuel Charpentier from France and Jennifer Diodena from the United States will receive ten million Swedish kronor, which is $ 1.1 million, and a gold medal.

The announcement was made by the secretary general of the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences, Goran Hanson.

"There is a tremendous power in this genetic tool, which affects us all," said the chairman of the Chemistry Prize Committee, Klaus Gustavson.

"It has not only led to a revolution in science, but to innovations and will lead to a breakthrough in new medical treatments."

He said that thanks to this, any genome can be edited "to repair genetic damage."

He is cautious that this technology should be used with great caution, but it will "provide the human race with great opportunities."

Yesterday, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for discoveries in the field of black holes, and on Monday the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to researchers who discovered the hepatitis C virus. Tomorrow the Nobel Prize in Literature will be awarded and on Friday the Nobel Peace Prize.

Next week, the final prize will be awarded - the Nobel Prize in Economics.

The prestigious award comes with a gold medal and a sum of ten million Swedish kronor - more than $ 1.11 million - as part of the estate of inventor Alfred Noble, the initiator of the award, from 124 years ago.

The amount has recently increased due to currency inflation.
