Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Director of the Middle East Department at the Foreign Ministry, appointed Alexander Kinchak as his special envoy to resolve the crisis in Syria.
"The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, has instructed to appoint the Director of the Middle East and North Africa Department in the Foreign Ministry, Alexander Kinchak, as a special representative of the minister for settlement issues in Syria," Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said in a press conference today.
Zakharova added that Kinchak's powers in his new mission will include representing the Russian side in the course of bilateral and multilateral contacts on the settlement in Syria, including within the Geneva formula, as well as Astana, with the aim of working to reach a solution to the crisis in Syria.
Kinchak held the position of Director of the Middle East and North Africa Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry since late 2018 after his return to Moscow from Syria, where he was ambassador to Damascus between 2014 and 2018 and before that, he worked at the Russian embassy in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
