The award is "for its efforts to combat hunger, for its contribution to improving peace conditions in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict."
Berit Reiss-Andersen, chair of the Norwegian Nobel committee, pointed out the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the global food supply by revealing the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.
"The coronavirus pandemic has contributed to a sharp increase in the number of hunger victims in the world," he said.
"In the face of the pandemic, the World Food Program has shown an impressive ability to scale up its efforts."
"As the organization itself has said: until the day we have a vaccine, food is the best vaccine against chaos," Reiss-Andersen said.
