Thomas Kemmerich still does not consider the acceptance of his election as Prime Minister in Thuringia to be a mistake.

The FDP therefore drops him.

  • The

    FDP top leadership

withdraws support for short-term Prime Minister Kemmerich.

  • The Thuringian member of the state parliament does

    not

    see the

    acceptance of his election

    as a mistake.

  • It is unclear whether he will run again as the

    top candidate

    in the 2021 election

    .

Erfurt / Berlin - The FDP Federal Presidium drops the controversial Thuringian short-term Prime Minister

Thomas Kemmerich

.

After a phone call on Friday, the members rejected his latest statements on Twitter.

In response to a comment, Kemmerich wrote about his

election as Prime Minister

of Thuringia with votes from the AfD: "It was not the acceptance of the election that was the mistake, but the way the other democratic parties dealt with the situation."

@Fdp stands for #freedom, for a country that offers everyone the best possible opportunities.

There can be no collaboration with the #AfD, which relies on social exclusion and does not clearly distance itself from right-wing extremist elements.

"Accepting the election was a serious political and personal

towards him.

On Friday he wrote on Twitter: "There can be no cooperation with the AfD, which relies on social exclusion and does not clearly distance itself from right-wing extremist elements."

Thomas Kemmerich: The federal government refuses to give him any support

The FDP

top

leadership has announced

that it will refuse

any

support

to

Kemmerich

if he

wants to run

again as a

top candidate

in the state elections in April next year

.

Specifically, this means "no financial, logistical or organizational support" for the election campaign from the federal association, said Wissing.

The decision to run for candidacy is made by the

Thuringia Regional Association

.

After a phone call from the Presidium this morning, the FDP General Secretary @Wissing explains: The FDP Presidium dissociates itself from the current statements by Thomas Kemmerich.

Kemmerich was unexpectedly elected Prime Minister of Thuringia on February 5, 2020 * because the

AfD

under parliamentary group leader

Björn Höcke also

voted for him.

This is classified by the Office for the

Protection of the Constitution

as a right-wing extremist leader.

Höcke then congratulated Kemmerich with a handshake, while the party leader of the Left,

Susanne Hennig-Wellsow

, threw a bouquet of flowers at his feet.

After protests: Kemmerich resigns after a few days

The election sparked horror and

protests

in Germany

, which is why Kemmerich

announced

his

resignation

one day after the election

, which the short-term prime minister did shortly afterwards.

Kemmerich had announced in the summer that he wanted to run again for the FDP state chairmanship.

At the time, he left it open whether as a top candidate for the state parliament.

Federal head

Christian Lindner

had suggested that he renounce top positions.

Kemmerich is currently still the

parliamentary group leader

in Thuringia.

After much back and forth,

Bodo Ramelow

(left) was re-elected Prime Minister in March, who had held this office even before Thomas Kemmerich was elected.

The Red-Red-Green government and the CDU parliamentary group had previously negotiated that there would be new elections in April 2021.
