For a long time the UN World Food Program has been providing assistance to some of the most dangerous places in the world. In the past year it has provided assistance to nearly one hundred million people in 88 countries. From food supply in South Sudan to emergency emergency services despite Corona virus limitations. The organization has won the Nobel Peace Prize program.



"In awarding the prize this year, (the committee) seeks to turn the world's eyes on the millions of people suffering or facing the threat of hunger," said Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee Chair Brit Rice-Andersen in an attempt To illustrate its importance in the fragile reality in which the world finds itself today.

"The global food program plays a key role in cooperation that turns food security into an instrument of peace."



The head of the organization, David Beasley, said that he learned about winning the award from the media.

It was said that all his staff deserved the reward and respect that accompanies it.

"I know I do not deserve this award, but for all the men and women around the world who have participated in the World Food Program, and our partners who risk their lives every day," he told the Associated Press in a phone call from Manager.

Beasley, who served as governor of South Carolina, was appointed director of the 2017 program by U.S. President Donald Trump, who himself hopes to win the coveted award.

In announcing the decision, the award committee noted that the problem of world hunger has intensified again in recent years, not least because of the corona plague, which has added to the difficulties faced by millions of people around the world.

"In the past year 135 million people have suffered from severe hunger, the highest number in many years," it read.

"Most of the increase was caused by wars and armed conflicts. The corona plague also contributed to an increase in the number of world hunger victims."

In total, the UN estimates that 690 million people suffer from various types of hunger.

Alongside its decision, the Commission called on governments to ensure that the World Food Program of the United Nations, as well as other aid organizations will receive financial support for streaming relief to millions of people in countries like Yemen, Congo, Nigeria, South Sudan and Burkina Faso.

There was no shortage of reasons or candidates for the award on the list this year, with 211 people and 107 organizations being nominated for the award ahead of the deadline for nominations - February 1st.

The Nobel Committee maintains complete secrecy before the announcement of the prestigious award in the world, but the plan has already appeared in the shortlist submitted by the International Institute for Peace Studies in Stockholm.

"The global hunger problem is growing and so is the global problem of violent conflicts," said Institute Director Dan Smith.

"The global food program operates at the crossroads where these two problems meet."

Along with the gold medal associated with it, the prize includes a cash sum of ten million kronor (about $ 1.1 million), which dwarfs the funding the program requires for its operation.

By 2020, the organization had received nearly $ 6.4 billion in cash or goods, with more than a third, over $ 2.7 billion, coming from the United States.



Beasley's journey to Niger, where he met with leaders and visited villages, comes after a three-day visit to neighboring Burkina Faso.

The area where the two countries are located south of the Sahara, is frequently attacked by extremists and is characterized by an extreme climate.

Beasley noted that the area is going through a "destructive" period.
