Orange launches its first 5G offers

2020-10-09T07:24:03.180Z

It will be necessary to wait until December to be able to take advantage of the network, but the subscriptions are already marketed.

This time the race is on.

Orange is the first of the four French mobile operators to market 5G packages.

The suspense did not last long since the process of allocating frequencies linked to this technology is not yet complete.

But by already putting its offers on the market, the incumbent operator gives time: he is number one.

In fact, Orange is seizing the opportunity to launch new 4G packages that are a little more expensive, but “

compatible

” with 5G.

This means that in areas where 5G will be on, consumers will be able to benefit from this network.

It is also a message to its customers, Orange wants to go fast and not be satisfied with a big city for the kickoff.

An unlimited plan at 94.99 euros

The 70 GB package, 5G compatible, is offered at 24.99 euros per me for a year, then 39.99 euros.

In other words, you have to pay 5 euros more for a 5G compatible package compared to 4G.

There is not really a rise in prices.

Prices range up to an unlimited data package at 79.99 euros per month for one year then 94.99 euros.

Enough to tickle detractors of 5G who fear that the new generation of mobile telephony will lead to a surge in the consumption of mobile data.

This type of package is primarily intended for professional use.

"

It is also possible that Orange is targeting customers who will give up their fixed subscription to connect only in 5G

", analyzes Dimitri Carbonelle, Telecom consultant.

5G can indeed support this type of use described as “

fixed wireless

”.

"

This can be an interesting solution while waiting for the arrival of fiber ... Unless operators frankly substitute 5G for fiber to free themselves from the burden of managing internet boxes

", decrypts Dimitri Carbonelle, before to add "

the operators remain very discreet about their real intentions

".

The other question is how long will operators manage to mark up the price of 5G packages.

During the launch of 4G, Free had played the troublemakers and after a month, the monetization of 4G had fizzled out.

Orange is not the only one to communicate on 5G.

SFR has chosen the educational card by explaining the strengths of this technology on its site and highlighting compatible smartphones.

Indeed, to take advantage of 5G, the phone must be adapted.

But don't panic, owners of a 4G, or even 3G / 2G smartphone will continue to be able to use their device without any problem.

These networks will continue to operate "

for many more years,

" reassures Nicolas Guérin, president of the French Telecoms Federation.
