Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced today that a ceasefire agreement has been reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Sputnik quoted Lavrov as telling reporters, “In response to the call of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and in accordance with his agreements with the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, the two parties agreed to declare a ceasefire that will come into effect from 12 o'clock today for humanitarian purposes to exchange prisoners of war and others Detainees and dead bodies by the International Committee of the Red Cross ”.

Lavrov added that "agreement on specific criteria regarding the ceasefire in Nagorny Karabakh will be done separately," noting that "the foreign ministers of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan have agreed on a common document."

In turn, the Russian Foreign Ministry clarified in a statement published on its website that “Armenia and Azerbaijan will start with the mediation of the co-chairs of the Minsk Group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and on the basis of the basic principles of the settlement objective negotiations with the aim of reaching a peaceful settlement as soon as possible.”

The agreement came after closed talks in Moscow that lasted ten hours by the foreign ministers of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan Sergey Lavrov, Zograb Manatsakyanian and Dzhikhon Bayramov on the situation in Nagorny Karabakh, and the parties refused to make statements before the start of the talks.

Yesterday, the Russian president called on the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan to hold consultations in Moscow regarding the situation in "Nagorny Karabakh" and demanded an end to hostilities for humanitarian reasons in order to exchange bodies and prisoners.

The situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh region witnessed a sudden military escalation on the twenty-seventh of last September, at a time when the Armenian and Azerbaijani sides exchanged accusations about the causes of this escalation.
