The number of participants in opposition demonstrations in Minsk and other cities in Belarus arrested by law enforcement agencies today (Sunday) exceeded 100 people.

This was announced by the TAS news agency based on the Belarusian human rights organization Vesna.

Vesna said that three-quarters of the detainees are from Minsk and 37 of the total detainees are journalists and press photographers covering the protest events.

Among the detainees were also Thas journalists who were soon released.

Earlier in the day, protesters clashed with police near the Minsk Monument - Hero City.

The police made violent arrests and dispersed the protesters using stun grenades and water cannons.

The independent Belarusian news site tut.by reported that in the western city of Brest at least 17 protesters were arrested and also there they encountered police violence.

The brutal wave of arrests comes less than a day after Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko met with protest leaders detained at a KGB detention facility in the capital, Minsk.

This is the first public dialogue of its kind between the government and the opposition body, whose stated goal is to bring about free elections and regime change.

It is also the first recognition of its kind for the official leaders of the protest movement that has begun in the country since the presidential election in July, during which Lukashenko was accused of forgery and repression of protest against him.

The meeting lasted nearly four and a half hours during which Lukashenko told the imprisoned leaders: "The motto of our government is to 'allow dialogue'. You are some of you lawyers, you probably understand that the constitution cannot be written on the street. I look at the issue more broadly and I want you to Her like that. "
