The forest fires that have affected regions of Syria - where they have killed three people - and Lebanon in recent days have been completely controlled, the Syrian authorities and the Lebanese civil defense said on Sunday, October 11.

Several families had to flee residential areas near the fires, according to local media.

Syrian Agriculture Minister Mohamad Hassane Katna has reported 156 fires since Friday, including 95 in Latakia, 49 in Tartous and 12 in Homs.

These fires were presented as one of the many factors that triggered the unprecedented popular uprising against the Lebanese political class a year ago.

No official estimate of the damage caused and areas destroyed has been communicated at this stage in Lebanon or Syria.

Wind and heat helped spread the flames, but the origin of the fires is unclear.

Several fires have also broken out in recent days in Israel, neighboring Syria and Lebanon, leading to the evacuation of thousands of people according to the authorities.

However, they were all brought under control overnight from Friday to Saturday, according to firefighters.

"

After more than 30 hours of fighting the fire, we have mastered the main outbreaks,

" they said in a statement on Saturday morning.
