General Amir Abulafia, until a few months ago the head of the IDF's planning department, informed Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi in recent days that he was interested in going on retirement leave so as not to continue to receive full pay while he was not in an official position, Israel Today has learned.

Major General Abulafia will run for another post at the General Staff from his retirement leave, and if he does not receive an appointment he will complete his retirement leave and be discharged from the army.

This is an unusual move at the top of the military, where there are usually several senior officers "in the air" waiting to be assigned.

In July, we published an article on the subject under the headline "Officers without Portfolio," which also mentioned Abulafia's name as a senior officer without a position, after finishing his position as head of the Planning Division in June.

Particularly serious was the case of the outgoing Chief of Staff, Brigadier General Meirav Kirchner, who waited for more than eight months as a "project manager" without an official position, after being promised that she would run for the post of chief of staff. And informed him that he did not even intend to allow her to run for office and that she retired from the IDF.

Major General Amir Abulafia served in the IDF for 34 years as a commander. Among other things, he served as commander of special air forces, commander of the Benjamin Brigade, commander of the Nahal Brigade, head of the Operations Department, commander of Division 340, commander of Division 162, and head of the Planning Brigade.

Abulafia is considered a highly esteemed officer who is not afraid to express his opinion, as evidenced by an article he wrote about the officers' fear of expressing an independent position and disagreeing with the position of their commanders.

Abulafia's name was also mentioned a few months ago as a possible projector for Corona before the appointment of Prof. Gamzo, but in the end the appointment did not materialize.

The IDF greatly appreciated the unconventional move, and some would say the brave, of General Abulafia to go on retirement leave and run for another position in the General Staff.

Apparently, the decision on the big round of appointments at the General Staff will not be made before January.

This is a very large round of appointments in which the identity of the next deputy chief of staff (the leading candidate is General Herzli Halevi) and many other generals will be decided.

Sources involved in the details told "Israel Today" that "it is very nice that the retirement comes on the initiative of General Abulafia. He wants to go on retirement leave out of officer fairness and this is a very worthy act."
