Gaza residents are looking for junk food in the wake of the exacerbation of poverty in Gaza to an unprecedented rate, said the head of the Palestinian Refugee Agency (UNRWA), Philip Lazarini.
"There is despair and hopelessness," he told the British Guardian. He said UNRWA personnel in the Gaza Strip had reported searches for junk food.
"More and more people are having a hard time providing a meal or two a day to their families."
Mazarin, causing a veteran in the humanitarian field, he was appointed Commissioner-General of UNRWA in April during the grave crisis the agency.
Alongside corona constant threat of budget problems, relations with the United States exploded because of arguments, like Israel, that the agency was fundamentally flawed. "Because of the volatile and volatile atmosphere, we need a stable UNRWA," said the Swiss, whose agency is responsible for 5.6 million Palestinians across the Middle East. Under the Corona's limitations, it focuses on fundraising, even through video calls. Employing 30,000 people, there is a constant shortage of cash. With a deficit of more than $ 100 million each year, UNRWA is in constant pursuit of a budget that will prevent it from going bankrupt.
Due to the financial shortage, the agency has cut its education and health services.
In 2018, US President Donald Trump decided to stop providing about $ 300 million a year in aid to UNRWA, following his outrage over the Palestinians' "lack of appreciation.
" "This is a threat, this is a real threat," Lazarini said. However, he noted that in parallel with UNRWA's attempt to rebuild relations with Washington, other donors have stepped into its shoes.
2018 was ultimately the organization's most successful year in fundraising this five years.
While recovering from the scandals, UNRWA has been hit hard by the epidemic. "There is more pressure on the organization to give more, but at the same time, the environment of our donors is more complicated because everyone has been hurt financially," he said.
