The Interior Ministry of Belarus announced today (Monday) that police could use live weapons in the streets if required, due to "increasing extremism" on the part of protesters against ruler Alexander Lukashenko.

Police said 713 people had been arrested yesterday in daily demonstrations against the dictator in the past two months, and security forces used water hoses and batons to disperse the crowd.

"The demonstrations, most of which moved to Minsk, have become extremely organized and extreme," the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

"Because of this, Interior Ministry and Interior Forces personnel will not leave the streets, and if necessary, will use special equipment and military weapons."

Since August 9, dissidents have taken to the streets of the capital, Minsk, and other cities in the former Soviet republic, demanding new presidential elections.

Lukashenko denies the results were falsified, and most opposition leaders fled the country or were arrested.

The ruler of Belarus for the past 26 years has been called Europe's last dictator, and despite sanctions imposed by the EU on senior government officials, he still enjoys Russia's support.

Following the escalation of violence, the EU foreign minister said today that sanctions would also be imposed on Lukashenko himself.

It was not included in the original October 2 list, which included 40 people.

However, the bloc says that its refusal to consider holding new elections in order to get out of the crisis leaves it no choice.

"This is the answer to the developing situation in Belarus," EU Foreign Minister Joseph Burrell said after a meeting of Luxembourg foreign ministers.

"There has been no sign from the Belarusian authorities that they are ready for a dialogue of any kind," Burrell told reporters, noting Lukashenko's "complete unwillingness" to hold talks on organizing free and fair presidential elections.

Belarus announced its own response measures against the union earlier this month.
