A year ago, a 22-year-old man drove through Nandlstadt with an ax in a drug frenzy - and triggered a major operation.

Now the man was on trial.

Nandlstadt / Landshut -

It was a scene like from a horror film: A driver was driving through Nandlstadt on October 29, 2019, when a man in a camouflage suit suddenly appeared out of the darkness at an intersection in the center of the village and came towards him with a raised ax.

It is Joe J. (name changed), who a year later will say before the Landshut District Court regarding his memory of the incidents that night that he knows "very little to nothing".

Rioted with ax in Nandlstadt: man rages in the place for an hour

According to the contents of the file, the 22-year-old from Nandlstadt was not yet available two days after the incident, which triggered a large-scale police operation on suspicion of a rampage.

According to the public prosecutor's office, he had raged through the town center for an hour with 0.72 per mille and pumped full of drugs, causing property damage totaling around 4100 euros.

The police had been able to put a stop to his frenzy with difficulty and with pepper spray.

The district court now had to examine the young man's placement in a rehab facility - and after a shortened hearing of evidence also ordered one.

Eighteen witnesses and three experts were originally invited to provide information on the alleged facts.

According to the indictment represented by prosecutor Romina Rodde, patrols from several police stations had arrived in Nandlstadt at around 11.40 p.m. in order to pursue J., who repeatedly demanded to be shot.

According to the indictment, he left his home around 11 p.m.

On his way through the city center, J. shouted “Sieg Heil” several times and loudly while he hit nine street lamps and a power distribution box as well as a stone slab and two vehicles with his ax.

When the driver finally approached, he stood in the way and executed ax blows in the direction of the vehicle.

According to the prosecution, it was only thanks to the driver's quick evasive action that there was no damage.

When a passer-by approached J. and a policeman tried to prevent contact, he fell.

J. came up to him with his ax raised.

The policeman saved himself by grabbing the pepper spray.

The 22-year-old fled to the station area, where he finally gave up.

Drugs, alcohol and abandonment by the girlfriend - a dangerous mix

The criminal investigation officer reported to the court that the accused could hardly be brought "under control" afterwards.

For example, he tore out the infusion needles laid by the rescue several times.

Defense attorney Patrick Schladt stated on behalf of his client that the information provided by the police would not be questioned;

the facts will be admitted.

Co-defense attorney Stefan Götzfried pointed out that J. is a “well integrated young man” who slipped through contact with drugs, was flown out of the apartment and left by his girlfriend.

"In this situation he lost his nerve."

After a horror tour through Nandlstadt: Placement in an educational institution required

The psychiatric expert Sibylle Hornung-Knobel stated that at the time of the crime J. had been suffering from an acute mixed intoxication with perception disorders.

The 22-year-old had no evidence of a right-wing radicalism.

According to Hornung-Knobel, there was definitely less guilty responsibility.

In his plea, Schladt pointed out that his client is therapy-motivated and has an understanding of the disease and thus has the best prerequisites "to get out of the spiral of addiction".

Schladt, Götzfried and Rodde unanimously called for the 22-year-old - who has already been in a hospital since the incident - to be placed in a rehab facility.

Judge Christian Lederhofer followed the motions with the comment that if you see the defendant today, you can hardly understand what happened that night.

"It was obviously too much of the drug."
