The remains of the UAV that crashed in Iran, today

Iran is urging the two countries to end the conflict and has offered to mediate between the parties, warning of "infiltration" into its territory after several shells landed in Iranian villages on the border.

Iran has a large Azerbaijani minority, especially in the northwest of the country.

It is estimated that about ten million of Iran's 80 million people are Azerbaijani.

About one hundred thousand Armenians live in the country.

The fighting worries the international community because it takes place near Azeri gas and oil pipelines passing through Europe.

It could develop into a regional conflict with Russia, which has a defense alliance with Armenia, and with Turkey, Azerbaijan's close ally.

Baku demands Turkish involvement in the talks, which are led by Russia, and to a lesser extent France and the United States.

Armenians warn that Turkey is planning another genocide against them, but Ankara says the war will end only after the end of the "Armenian occupation."

The map of the fighting

Turkey denies sending Syrian mercenaries to fight alongside Azeri forces, allegations heard by Armenia, France, Russia and Syria.

According to the Syrian Organization for Human Rights, dozens of Syrian fighters were killed in the fighting that began on September 27.

Meanwhile, the death toll continues to rise.

Separatist authorities in Nagorno-Karabakh said 17 soldiers had been killed in the past day, a total of 542 since the fighting began.

Azerbaijan, which does not disclose its military casualties, has reported 42 civilians killed and 206 wounded since the fighting began.
