SPIEGEL survey: Baerbock catches up with Habeck on K question

Is Robert Habeck still the Greens' most likely candidate for chancellor? According to a SPIEGEL survey, co-boss Annalena Baerbock has increased in popularity significantly in recent months, especially in her own warehouse.

Robert Habeck did not want to commit himself to all of the questions.

"I'm doing my best, Annalena is doing her best, and then we'll see what happens to it," said the Green chief in an interview a few days ago.

Whether he or co-chair Annalena Baerbock will lead the party in the federal election next year is still open.

Both of them have been asked repeatedly about their candidacy for chancellor since the historic poll high in 2019.

The starting position was clear for a long time: Habeck is better known and more popular with the population, which makes him attractive as a candidate beyond party lines.

Baerbock, however, has great support in the green base and has repeatedly been able to distinguish itself professionally.

But in the meantime something has shifted, as a representative survey by the opinion research institute Civey on behalf of SPIEGEL shows.

Around 20 percent of Germans prefer Baerbock, 35 percent would rather see Habeck as a candidate for chancellor.

In a comparable Civey survey in November 2019, Baerbock only came to 11 percent, Habeck to more than 41 percent.

The decisive trend, however, becomes apparent when looking at the answers sorted by voting intention.

Because among the supporters of the Greens 44 percent are for Habeck as candidate for chancellor, but also 35 percent for Baerbock.

In November 2019, only 17 percent in their own camp selected the party leader as a better candidate for chancellor, 59 percent chose Habeck at the time.

There are also more people among supporters of other parties who would prefer Baerbock to Habeck - even if they do not want to vote for the Greens themselves.

About 28 percent of the SPD supporters spoke out in favor of them, 39 percent against Habeck.

Baerbock convinced twice as many Social Democrats as at the end of 2019. With a view to a theoretically possible green-red-red coalition also remarkable: 28 percent of the left supporters are for Baerbock - and a good 30 percent for Habeck.

In the youngest group of voters, Baerbock and Habeck are even

The Greens chairmen are likely to sit up and take notice of another detail from the SPIEGEL survey: they are tied for the youngest age group between 18 and 29 years with a good 30 percent each when it comes to the candidacy for chancellor.

The older the respondents, the stronger the tendency towards Robert Habeck: In the age group 65 and over it comes to 39 percent, Baerbock, however, only to 17 percent.

But the young are the party's most important group of voters, as another SPIEGEL survey recently showed.

Overall, the Greens are in the polls at almost 20 percent, ahead of the SPD with around 16 percent.

Should the Greens decide on a coalition with the Union, however, they would only be junior partners according to the current status: CDU and CSU have been steadily achieving around 35 percent for weeks.

Then the K question would also be answered automatically - but differently than the Greens would like.
