A three-ton sea elephant surprised the residents of Puerto Cisne (in southern Chile) last Tuesday night by crawling through the streets aimlessly.
The animal moved about 10 blocks through the residential area shortly before the curfew established in the country by the Covid-19 pandemic began.
Residents of the place alerted the Chilean Navy that, with the help of a group of police officers, naval officers and some concerned locals, they were able to help the elephant back into the water.
Using a plastic net, fifty people guided it back to the sea, using large black tarps to block the path and chart a safe route for the animal. After a few hours, the elephant finally returned to its natural environment, cheered and applauded by the people present. "The animal traveled quite a few blocks and is now safe and sound from ourselves, humans, and the dogs that hurt it," Sergeant José Muñoz, from the Chilean Navy, explained to the local media.
