October 13 is the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Canada.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned that day that China's coercive diplomacy, Hong Kong's repressive measures, and detention of Uyghur Muslims will be counterproductive to China and the rest of the world.

In 1970, Trudeau's father and former prime minister, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, established diplomatic relations with China.

When Trudeau attended the press conference, he was asked about the changes in the relationship between the two countries. He described Beijing's internal and external repression and aggressive behavior as a pressure on China-Canada relations.

Canada detained Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's vice chairman, at the request of the United States, leading to a sharp turnaround in China-Canada relations.

Trudeau said: "We will continue to be firmly committed to working with our allies to ensure that China's compulsory diplomacy, arbitrary detention of two Canadian citizens and citizens of other countries in the world, will not be regarded by them as a successful strategy." He mentioned, Canada is concerned about protecting the human rights of Hong Kong and Uighurs.

Trudeau said that China is the world's second largest economy and has a significant economic impact on other countries, including Canada. The federal government wants to continue trading with Beijing, but it will not silence human rights issues.

He said, "Canada will continue to cooperate with like-minded countries in the world and show China that China is not on a particularly effective path in handling internal and global affairs, whether for itself or for all of us."
