Fears across Europe of losing control of the Corona virus outbreak grew today (Thursday) after a record number of people infected in Germany, the Czech Republic, Italy and Poland.

France imposed a night curfew on most of its major cities, including the capital Paris, and new restrictions were imposed on London.

In recent weeks there has been a sharp increase in the number of cases on the continent with the onset of autumn, and authorities have begun re-imposing restrictions lifted in the summer.

The Czech Republic, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, France and the United Kingdom

are the main sources of concern.

The head of Europe at the World Health Organization has called on governments to act "uncompromisingly" to take control of the virus.

"These steps are meant to keep us all ahead of the curve and flatten its trajectory," said Dr. Hans Klooga, wearing a mask. "So we have to accept them when they have another easy relationship instead of going the hard way."

He cited epidemiological models that show that if 95% of people wear a mask and keep their distance, Europe could avoid 281,000 deaths by February.

However, he warned that easing the restrictions could lead to a five-fold increase in the mortality rate by January.

According to John Hopkins University data, close to 230,000 deaths from the virus have been recorded in all European countries, compared to about 217,000 in the United States.

Experts agree that the real data is higher.

Fearing that new restrictions would hurt the economy, which was only just beginning to recover slightly from the sharpest recession in modern history, European markets recorded sharp price declines.

The main indices fell by more than 2%.

Night curfew in Paris, restrictions in Germany: Europe is fighting the second wave of the Corona

While Germany, the most populous country in the EU, is still in relatively good shape, warning bells are ringing in it as well.

Today, the National Center for Disease Control reported 6,638 diagnoses per day.

The previous record was a little less than 6,300, and was set at the end of March, although since then the tests have expanded significantly.

Chancellor Angela Merkel and the leaders of Germany's 16 provincial states agreed during the night on tightening the laws on wearing masks, early closing of bars and limiting the number of gatherings in the main hotspots.

However, Merkel's chief of staff, Helga Brown, said "it probably won't be enough".

"We must stop this exponential rise, the sooner the better," he stressed.

He noted that Germany's neighbors must take "extremely drastic measures".

As of tonight, the Netherlands has closed its bars and restaurants, but documentation from a mass party in The Hague, near Parliament, minutes before the start of the closure has stirred the spirits in the country.

In the Czech Republic, schools were closed, and the army set up a corona treatment hospital at an exhibition center in Prague.

In the past day, 9,544 new cases were diagnosed, an increase of 900 from the previous record set only a few days ago.

"We must increase our capacity as soon as possible," said Czech Prime Minister Andrei Babish.

"We do not have time. The forecast is not good."

In Bavaria, Germany, they said they had received a request to treat Corona patients from the Czech Republic.

Curfew in France, restrictions in London

In France, President Emanuel Macron has put 18 million people in nine provinces, including Paris, under curfew starting Saturday for at least four weeks.

It will begin at 9 p.m.

Orléne Russo, director of public health services in the Paris district, said about half of the hospital intensive care beds are occupied by Corona patients, while other hospital beds are also filling up fast.

"It's a kind of spring wave that affects everyone at the same time," he said.

"We have a weak point in our locating policy. It was the private space, the festive events."

At the same time, police conducted searches of the homes of former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, the current health minister and his predecessor and other senior officials as part of an investigation into government treatment of the plague.

It has started following dozens of complaints in recent months, particularly due to a shortage of masks and other equipment.

The UK announced today that the capital London and six other areas in the kingdom have been put at a second risk level out of three, so millions of people will not be allowed to visit people who do not live with them and will be asked to reduce their travel.

"I know these restrictions are difficult for people. I hate the fact that we have to impose them," said British Health Minister Matt Hancock.

"But they are necessary to keep people safe and prevent greater economic damage in the future."

Klooga, a senior member of the World Health Organization, said most infections occur in homes, enclosed spaces and communities that do not comply with protective measures.

"The development of the epidemic in Europe is of great concern," he said. "But we must not avoid relatively easy steps so that we do not have the same very harmful and painful steps we saw in the first wave."

Italy, which has so far avoided a severe blow in the second wave, recorded the sharpest daily jump since the onset of the plague. 7,332 new cases have been diagnosed, which weighs heavily on the country's contact detection system.

Poland recorded a record close to 9,000 new cases today. Since Saturday, masks have been required to be worn in open spaces and strict restrictions have been placed on gatherings. Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia also set daily records in the number of infections.

In Portugal, the number of congregations has been limited to five, and the state is preparing to impose the wearing of masks in public and the imposition of fines on those who violate regulations.

Even Sweden, which has taken a controversial approach while leaving large parts of the country open in the first wave, is considering exacerbating the measures.

"Too many do not follow the instructions," said Prime Minister Stefan Lofven. "If there is no correction here, we must take sharper steps." He did not specify what they might be.
