The president of Kyrgyzstan announced his resignation on Thursday, October 15, hoping to put an end to the political chaos and demonstrations punctuated by violence that have plagued the country for ten days, after controversial legislative elections.

I do not cling to power, I do not want to enter the history of Kyrgyzstan like the president who shed blood by shooting his fellow citizens.

That is why I decided to resign,

”said Sooronbai Jeenbekov, according to the presidency.

The latter had promised last week to withdraw from power once the country has stabilized, and added Wednesday that he would therefore wait for new legislative elections.

The results of those of October 4, peppered with fraud and suspicion of vote buying, had been canceled after violent demonstrations and the occupation of many public buildings by various factions of opponents.

Finally, Mr. Jeenbekov had to resolve to resign on Thursday, under pressure from the newly elected prime minister by Parliament, Sadyr Japarov, a nationalist with a sulphurous reputation who demanded his immediate departure.

The president thus noted that the entry into office of the new head of government did not "

reduce aggressiveness

" or "

calls for my resignation

".

"

For me, peace in Kyrgyzstan, the integrity of our country, the unity of our people and peace in society are the most important

", noted the Kyrgyz president, who calls accordingly "

Japarov and other politicians to withdraw their supporters from the streets

”.

Sadyr Japarov was serving a long prison sentence until the beginning of last week for having participated in the hostage-taking of a regional governor.

He was freed by his supporters thanks to the post-electoral chaos, had his conviction overturned by the courts in record time and then imposed, by taking his supporters out into the streets, his nomination as prime minister.

Kyrgyzstan, the most pluralist but also the most unstable of the former Central Asian republics, has already experienced two revolutions and seen three of its presidents imprisoned or exiled since its independence.
